If you have a costume party coming up, want to dress up for a Walking Dead marathon, or there happens to be a mob of the undead heading to your town, then you might want to give this make up a try.
If you’ve ever wandered over to the staff page on wearthecheese, you’ll probably have noticed that I’m not really looking my best. That was the year my roommate and I decided to zombiefy ourselves for Halloween. We were students at the time so our budget was pretty tight, but we were able to pull off the look all for about £10 (or around $16 USD).
To start with you will need some white face paint. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive, makeup artist approved brand out there, just your bog standard kid’s face paint. The easiest way to apply this is with a small make up sponge, which are fairly cheap these days. Apply the white face paint all over your face, including your eyelids, and depending on hair length, your ears. Dab a little of the white paint onto your lips – try adding just a tint of blue to give you that corpsey look.
To give our eyes that sunken look we used a selection of black/grey eye shadows. It’s best to cover your entire eye lid, and blend a bit of it underneath your eye to get the right look. Depending on how good your make up skills are, you could always try blending a bit of grey eye shadow on your cheekbone to give your cheeks the same sunken look.
Now if you want to go just for the standard undead look then you could leave it at that. However if you’re more interested in the full on zombie apocalypse look, which is all the rage this season, then you can take it one step further. For this all you need is some fake blood, which you should be able to buy from all good costume stores. Dab some of the fake blood wherever you feel is appropriate. Even add a bloody handprint here or there. But be warned, it stains, so be careful with it! To make the look even freakier, try popping in some white-out contacts.
To complete the look you can either buy a really cheap white t-shirt, like we did, or destroy one that you already own. We ripped some holes into it and covered it in fake blood to give it that authentic look. Now you’ll be able to blend in with the crowds, just make sure you perfect your zombie groan too!
