The Sweet and Sour of Halloween Candy!

I. Love. Halloween. The costumes, the mischief, the pumpkins, and of course…. the CANDY! Yes, I as a grown person still love Halloween candy. While I might not have to peddle door to door any longer to receive said candy, I still enjoy the aisles stacked with bags and bags of colorful confections. As a kid, there were always candies that were favored and avoided in the hodgepodge of  goodies. Well, not much has changed – I still have a strong opinion on what are the best and worst of Halloween candies.. and I’m sure you do too! These are in no particular order – feel free to argue with me in the comments if I forgot your favorite!

BEST

Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses – the colors epitomize Halloween.. and the candy is classic. Even if it isn’t the sweetest, it is too perfect for Halloween. We all want a break from chocolate every now and then anyway right?

Kit Kat – a classic that you can share… or just pretend like you have more. The great thing about Kit Kat is that it tastes good even after sitting at the bottom of the bag for a lil and breaks a bit.

Reeses Peanut Butter Cup – the perfect amounts of peanut butter and chocolate that every kid looks forward to getting come Halloween. Again, perfect packaging colors for this spooky holiday!

Nerds – I am a sucker for cool packaging, and for some reason those little boxes always make me giddy. Again, they last forever and are a nice break from the copious amounts of chocolate.

Tootsie Rolls – I enjoy the classic, and this was always a staple I enjoyed as a kid. They are the perfect bite size to bring in a lunch box or sneak out of your purse (not that I keep candy in my purse regularly.. erm..).

WORST

Candy Corn – ew. I mean really. Ew. Who would ever want ‘candy’ that looks like corn and tastes like dirt.. well sugary dirt. For some reason this has become a staple for Halloween, and I for one think it needs to be stopped!

Smarties – there is nothing more depressing than seeing those pale pastel colors floating around a goodie bag. They aren’t yummy, their colors are depressing, and they really just remind me of mini antacids.

Pumpkin Shaped Reeses Peanut Butter Cups – I can’t explain it, but the special shaped cups never  taste as good as the original. They always taste a little stale… like they’ve been sitting around since the year before. And the chocolate to peanut butter ratio is never quite right. Stick to the original.

Gum – really? Gum? No one will ever chew that gum. Ever. Plus, you don’t eat gum – you just chew it. Plain, boring, usually hard gum. No thanks.

Flavored Tootsie Rolls – while I enjoy the original ‘chocolate’ flavor of Tootsie Rolls, the flavored (ie vanilla, cherry, etc) ones are just wrong. They never get the taste quite right and they are always too hard to even chew. Again, stick to the original!
