Nothing can grab your heart during any movie/tv show more than having a dog in the scene.. well, if you’re a dog person. If you’re not a dog person.. Shame on you! Throughout the genre, dogs have taken on the role of friend, enemy, and even colleague. In many cases, the pups in the pictures are as relatable as the humans by taking on human characteristics. Sci-fi pups are adorable, loyal, and adventurous – the perfect addition to any space traveling fantastical hero! Here are my favorite Sci-fi pups in no particular order. You may not agree, so feel free to comment and tell me who I left out!
Einstein -
Doc Brown’s scruffy dog from Back to the Future, Einstein has the distinct privilege to become the first time traveler! How much cooler can you get?
Falkor -
While technically a Luck Dragon from The Neverending Story, Falkor is obviously a dog. A huge, flying dog who helps his friend Bastian and Atreyu on their adventures. I love how his look blends realities both in the combination of a dog and a dragon as well as his ability to speak.
Frank the Pug -
He is a pug. An alien pug. He is an alien pug who wears a suit. YES.
Zero -
As the ghost dog companion to Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Zero represents the epitome of the loyal dog who can really pull at your heart strings. Zero is the one companion that always seems to be there for Jack. His image is adorably haunting and perfectly blends Halloween and Christmas with his shining red nose.
Nibbler -
I’m not really sure if Nibbler is supposed to be a dog.. or a cat.. or a rodent. But I say he’s a dog – mainly because in one episode he ate a cat. Deceivingly smart, annoyingly cute, with an insatiable appetite – Nibbler from Futurama relates all the best and worst attributes of pets. And just like Leela, no matter what, no matter what they do, you’ll always love em.

Hellhounds -
There are two specific incarnations of Hellhounds that I love. The first comes from the episode “Prom” on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In this episode, hellhounds are trained to attack people in formalwear (ie the prom). What is so great about these hounds is their campy appearance – they look like semi hairy people walking on all fours… sometimes…
The second version comes from Supernatural. The genius of the hounds on the show is that you never see them! That’s what makes the demon dogs from hell so scary – you never know where they are. They are ruthless killers that make the perfect pets for the king of hell.
Jake -
Oh adventurer from the Land of Ooo. BFF of Finn, the human. Your magical powers and violin skills make you the coolest dog of all. Totally Algebraic.
